A Greenbrier County garbage truck driver was arrested for DUI after striking a car on I-64.

According to a press release from Sheriff Bruce Sloan, on Monday, July 3, at approximately 3:30 p.m., members of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office and the West Virginia State Police responded to a vehicle accident on I-64 westbound at approximately the 163 mile marker near Alta.

The investigation revealed that a Chevrolet Blazer was stationary on the north side berm when it was struck in the rear by a westbound Greenbrier Valley Solid Waste garbage truck being operated by Gary Dowdy of Williamsburg. The impact forced the Blazer back into the right hand travel lane. The truck reportedly had suffered a tire issue and the driver was utilizing the berm to reach their shop. Two occupants of the Blazer were flown from the scene for medical treatment and a third passenger was transported to Greenbrier Valley Medical Center for treatment.

Dowdy was arrested for DUI with bodily injury and was arraigned before a Greenbrier County magistrate and released on bond.

Both westbound lanes were shut down for approximately one hour at which time one lane was opened. The second lane was opened approximately one hour and fifteen minutes later.

Deputy R. M. Lindsey is the investigating officer and was assisted by Sergeant G. R. Workman of the Sheriff’s office and Trooper Bynum of the State Police.
