Registration is now open for the Youth Education Program’s Summer Drama Camp ‘ACTions Speak Louder Than Words’ at Greenbrier Valley Theatre. Drama camp is offered to children age 5-14 and runs July 24-Aug. 6.
Students in GVT’s summer drama camp experience intensive study in theater arts. Campers age 5-14 spend two weeks exploring creative dramatics, acting for the camera, scene study, voice and movement, creative writing, storytelling and technical theater. Camp culminates in a performance written, developed and produced by students.
Returning summer camper Lauren Rodgers has been participating in this intensive program for many years, and her mother, Christy Clemons-Rodgers, has noticed what a positive influence it has had on her life.
“GVT’s Summer Drama Camp has not only introduced Lauren to the world of theater arts, it has impacted her personal growth in many wonderful ways,” Clemons-Rodgers said. “Through drama camp and other GVT experiences, she has learned that it’s okay to try something new, make mistakes, accept guidance, make adjustments and be resilient in forging on to make something incredible happen.”
While her mother gets to watch her daughter grow and learn, Lauren gets to spend time with old friends, make new ones and create something original that she can be proud of.
“One of the things I enjoy most about drama camp is working with our groups and performing a play we created ourselves! By the end of our showcases it feels great to know that you’re doing something that you created and people enjoy,” the returning camper said.
Campers age 5-8 attend for half days from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at a cost of $285. Older campers spend whole days, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., at the theatre for $385. Need-based scholarships are available. Registration for drama camp closes July 15. Space is limited.
