Mad scientists stalk Lewisburg on Earth Day for scavenger hunt

Where will you be on Earth Day in 2017?

Many local residents will be at the “Everybody’s a Scientist Scavenger Hunt” in Lewisburg for an afternoon of fun, community, and education. The free family-friendly event will take place from 2-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 22, at the parking lot between the Lewisburg United Methodist Church and the Lewisburg Post Office (adjacent to Rt. 60 E between Sibold Lane and N. Lee Street). The church address is 214 W. Washington Street, Lewisburg.

There will be three scavenger hunt start times at 2:30, 2:45 and 3 p.m. Explorers should be there 15-20 minutes to register before the hunt. Volunteer monitors and guides will be available at crosswalks and on the sidewalks in downtown Lewisburg. Roads will not be closed for this event so a parent or guardian must be on the Scavenger Hunt team.

Scavenger Hunt teams will comb through the Coolest Small Town in America (2011) to discover, collect and investigate different areas of SCIENCE. Teams will bring their treasures back to our Science Tables where local scientists and volunteers will help teams learn about their finds, solve puzzles, and even figure out whodunit in a mock crime scene.

The day will reinforce how science plays an important role in every job from Anatomy to Exercise to Gardening. Explorers can bring along a camera or cell phone with a camera to take pictures at the Mad Scientist photo booth. The day will celebrate the scientist in everybody.

The event is a non-partisan event designed to bring community together with a focus on the importance of science. Each child, no matter parental political party affiliation, will be able to send a respectful postcard to President of United States and/or Governor of WV with a note about why science is important to that child.

The event sponsors are Greater Greenbrier Valley Indivisible and Women’s March – Lewisburg. These progressive groups work together to affect positive change and build relationships in the community.
