Lewisburg native Kelsea Hower is among the student choreographers presenting their work at West Virginia University this month.
A Celebration of Dance, an annual concert presented by the dance program in the School of Theatre & Dance at West Virginia University, will be presented Nov. 10 and 11 in the Falbo Theatre at the Creative Arts Center at WVU, Morgantown. The program is a culmination of the works students have created and honed in the classroom. Each piece is choreographed and performed by the students. From these choreographies, five are chosen to move on to Dance Now!, the dance program’s spring concert.
Each semester, the WVU Dance Program presents this informal concert at the Creative Arts Center. Under the direction of Yoav Kaddar, director of the Dance Program, this showcase concert is a culmination of the semester’s creative work by WVU student choreographers and dancers, and features a wide variety of dance styles
Professor Yoav Kaddar says, “These aspiring choreographers study the art of making dances. This creative process leads to this production and is a vessel by which the students can work and present their final product. For the student performers it’s a similar opportunity – each performer is involved in the lengthy process of learning and rehearsing these new pieces. They begin the process through a required audition, which in itself is a learning experience and one that is vital for all performing art students to go through.”
These annual dance concerts open up opportunities for dance students to participate in a rigorous and professional environment, and is a building block towards their goals as professional artists. Each work is created from the passion and self-expression of our students and conveys a story or idea through movement. During the process of creating the piece, the students learn to work collaboratively with their peers.
Student choreographers for A Celebration of Dance include Hower, Faith Burman, Jada Davis, Gabrielle Green, Elizabeth Hall, Emilee Lamb-Hart, Morgan McNabb, Rachel Moffitt, Michael Morris, Anna Potter, Kathleen Sweat, Cadyn Turley and Margaret Wuletich.
