The Breast Cancer Awareness Team in Monroe County has had a very busy year. There have been several largely successful fundraisers and events take place within the county and we, the volunteers, cannot begin to thank the businesses and individuals in Monroe County that made this possible.
New to our program this year was the collaboration with the local schools. Both Mountain View and Peterstown Middle schools agreed to allow us to participate in sporting events to raise awareness and community involvement in our group. James Monroe High School was also nonpareil in our efforts to involve the youth. Mrs. Taylor’s art classes decorated the store front of Monroe Service Center for the kick-off event to breast cancer month “Remembrance Walk” in the Town of Union. The students at James Monroe took it upon themselves to have a hall decorating contest to see which class had the most “pink” spirit. Finally, there was a “Pink Night” during the JMHS football game on Oct. 25. Cancer survivors at the event were recognized and the students dressed up in their breast cancer pink to compete for a Queen’s gift card. The student section at the football game voted that Zachary Schumaker win the $50 gift card for his pink bibs. The survivors present at the game were honored during halftime and took part in a balloon launch.
So far this year, we have been able to donate over $8,000 to the WV Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening Program and we attribute that to the extremely generous citizens and businesses in Monroe County.
