Greenbrier Valley Medical Center (GVMC) announced Oct. 20 that Tom Neal has been appointed chief executive officer, effective Dec. 5. He joins GVMC from Hilton Head Hospital on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina where he has held several leadership roles during his more than 10 years there, most recently serving as chief operating officer.
“I look forward to supporting the talented physicians, nurses and other team members who work hard every day to provide high quality care,” Neal said. “We will work together to offer the best possible experience to the patients who trust their care to GVMC and make it the provider of choice in the region.”
While at Hilton Head, Neal recruited more than 25 physicians, significantly grew the orthopedics and OB programs, and successfully expanded cardiology services. He also oversaw the planning and construction of a 60,000 square foot outpatient center. His contributions have earned the hospital several recognitions. Of note, he worked collaboratively with Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue to earn Hilton Head Island the Heart Safe Community Award from the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
“Tom’s experience will complement our work to grow specialty services and recruit new providers to the area so our neighbors can stay close to home for care,” said Dr. Chris White, GVMC Board of Trustees chairman. “We look forward to working with him to respond to the healthcare needs of the Greenbrier Valley region.”
Previously, Neal held several roles during a 15-year tenure at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY. Highlights of his time there include his participation in the development of the nation’s first hand center where the first hand transplant was performed in the U.S. and the development of two freestanding emergency departments.
Neal is a registered nurse and began his training in the U.S. Army where he served in West Germany and Fort Knox. During Operation Desert Storm, Tom was recalled from the 5010th US Army Hospital to provide medical support at Fort Knox. He has completed several degrees and specialized trainings, holding a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Louisville, a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from the California College of Health Sciences and a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Regents College.
Neal has been very involved in the communities where he lives and currently participates in several non-profit and civic organizations in Hilton Head. He and his wife, Robin, look forward to relocating here and becoming active outside the hospital.
