The Spartan Marching Band of Greenbrier East High School claimed eight awards during two competitions Saturday, Oct. 15, in Kanawha County.
Saturday afternoon, participating in the Sissonville Cavalcade of Bands, the Spartan band earned overall first runner-up to the Grand Champion; second place in color guard; second place in percussion; and second place band in their class.
That evening in the West Virginia State Invitational Marching Band Festival, sponsored by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, Randall Reed-Smith, commissioner, the Spartan Band received awards for first place music; second place band in class; second place general effect; and second place percussion for their evening performance on Laidley Field in the University of Charleston Stadium.
This week, the Spartan band prepared for the annual Greenbrier East High School Homecoming celebration, participated in the all-school pep-rally; the annual Friday afternoon Homecoming parade; and pre-game and halftime performances during the Greenbrier East-Parkersburg South football game Friday night.
In addition, the Spartan band was selected to perform a half hour concert at the first delivery event at The Greenbrier Sports Complex on Tuesday, Oct. 18, when the first two truckloads of new beds arrived to be distributed to those who lost their homes in the June 23 flood as the re-built or new homes are ready for occupancy.
According to a spokesperson for Project Peaceful Slumber, each qualifying homeowner of a re-built or new home would be eligible for up to three new beds, mattress sets, linens and pillows. The project is being sponsored free of charge to the recipients through private donations to Project Peaceful Slumber and information on the project is available at 304-536-1813.
The Spartan Band will conclude the fall marching season with performances at the Princeton-Greenbrier East football game in Hunnicutt Field in Princeton Oct. 28 and in senior night at Spartan Stadium on Nov. 4 when Greenbrier East hosts highly ranked Spring Valley High School of Wayne County.
