The Hub Lights on Afterschool Rally is for children, parents, business and community leaders to come together and celebrate the achievements of after-school students and draw attention to the need for more after-school programs to serve the millions of children nationwide who are unsupervised and at risk each weekday afternoon. The gathering is one of more than 8,000 such events across the nation emphasizing the importance of keeping the lights on and the doors open after school.
The Hub opened in 2014 as a satellite location for High Rocks Education Corporation based in Hillsboro. It now serves an average of 20 children a day, providing homework assistance, mentoring, tutoring and clubs in photography, robotics, poetry and a variety of other subjects. The Hub also features a youth community kitchen that serves free afterschool snacks and dinner for youth participants.
Lights on Afterschool is organized by the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization working to ensure that all children have access to quality afterschool programs. More information on the Afterschool Alliance, Lights on Afterschool and America After 3PM is available at www.afterschoolalliance.org.
Guest at The Hub’s Lights on Afterschool event can enjoy refreshments, meet club facilitators, and make beeswax candles. The event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m. The Hub is located at 204 N. Jefferson Street in Montwell Park. Organized by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights on Afterschool has been celebrated annually since 2000 inviting Americans to take part in the only nationwide rally for after-school programs.
