Greenbrier East’s cross country team hosted a five-team competition last Saturday, Sept. 24. Capital, St. Albans, Richwood, and Princeton sent teams. Forty-seven runners competed, boys and girls running in the same race, a distance of 3.1 miles.
East’s Will Roark finished eighth, with a time of 20:22. Logan Mandeville finished tenth. East finished third in the meet. Coach Jerry Long noted that one of the teams that finished ahead of East was Richwood, which is not in their region. In order to make the state meet at the end of the year, a team must finish in the top three in its region. East, said Long, has a good shot at doing that. He is pleased with the team’s progress.
“Considering how hot the weather was, I thought they did well. All of them did well. We should make a good run, both boys and girls, to qualify for states this year,” said Long. East’s cross country team will compete at George Washington High School in Charleston Saturday, Oct. 1.
