Greenbrier County Schools offers a variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses for students interested in taking anadvanced level of challenging coursework in high school to prepare for success in college.
During “Time Out for Applause” at the September 13 board of education meeting, Director of Secondary Education Deborah White commended the success of students who are engaged in the rigorous instruction provided through the AP Program.
White introduced the following AP program students and instructors for board: Jeff Owens, instructor of AP U.S. Government and Politics and AP Psychology; Sarah Helmick, Greenbrier East High School (GEHS) AP student; Olivia McCarty, GEHS AP student; Taylor Carter, GEHS AP student; James Floyd, GEHS AP student; Abigail Plum, GEHS AP student;Teresa Rowe, instructor of AP U.S. History; Sarah Stacy, GEHS AP student; and Shannon Brunzo-Hager, Greenbrier West High School AP student.
Advanced Placement (AP) is a program created by the College Board which offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. American colleges and universities may grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations. The AP curriculum for each of the various subjects is created for the College Board by a panel of experts and college-level educators in that field of study. For a high school course to have the AP designation, the course must be audited by the College Board to ascertain that it satisfies the AP curriculum.
AP teachers attend AP Institutes during the summer every three years to stay current in their subject area and must post their course syllabus for College Board approval each year.
