The Greenbrier East volleyball team hosted Princeton, James Monroe, and Woodrow Wilson on Tuesday, September 13, and came away with three losses. The competition was tougher than it had been the previous week, when East won a four-team tournament that involved smaller schools.
Head coach Matt Sauvage remarked, “We just couldn’t get our offense going. Defensively, we’re playing really well, but offensively we haven’t been able to overcome that yet. It’s coming. When it does happen it’s looking really good.
“James Monroe beat us 2-1, Princeton 2-1 ,and Woodrow beat us 2-0. Against Princeton, the second set we played really well. The first and third set we jumped out early, but couldn’t hold on. Same thing with James Monroe – the first set a tight game, 25-23, the second we jumped on them 25-9, then the third set we jumped out quick, same thing … now Woodrow, I give all credit to Woodrow, they played really well. They won all three matches, they’re a good team.
“The biggest thing, the girls they don’t give up on anything, even when the play isn’t necessarily pretty, they don’t stop. The attitudes are good, the effort is there. We have a young team. The older ones are stepping up and leading. It’s getting better, that’s what I ask, is they keep taking the steps. The best thing I can say about this team is who they are. It’s one of the best group of girls I’ve ever coached, when it comes to who they are as people.”
