The Greenbrier East boys soccer team travelled to Oak Hill Tuesday night, where they lost 5-2. East’s two goals were scored by Jodice Shanklin and John Hofmann. East led the contest 1-0 for about 25 minutes, but after that it got ugly. Coach Lucas Lemine thought the team was not focused for most of the game.
After an opening game victory at James Monroe, East lost a close game to Princeton, lost to Buckhannon, won at home against Cross Lanes, then lost this game to Oak Hill.
Coach Lemine doesn’t believe this is due to a lack of skill. Part of it is finding what players are best suited to what positions, and it is also a matter of fundamentals. After the Cross Lanes game, he said the biggest difference between playing well and playing poorly is passing to people’s feet, instead of passing into space. On the defensive side, they do best when they make a play on the ball as it is passed, instead of trying to take the ball from an opponent’s feet.
East plays at Braxton County Thursday, at Capital Saturday. The next home game is Saturday, Sept. 10, noon, against Martinsburg.
