This year’s scholarship recipients at the Trillium School for Performing Arts will be supported through funds honoring Cyan Maroney.
Maroney began her training with Beth White and Carli Mareneck at The Dance Studio in Lewisburg at the age of 5. During high school, she performed with Trillium Performing Youth and Alderson Dance Ensemble.
Maroney’s greatest discipline, passion and talent went recognized as she completed her college degree from Connecticut College. During summer months, she performed professionally with Theatre West Virginia under choreographer and teacher Toneta Akers-Toler. After graduation in 2008, Maroney was invited to perform professionally with the West Virginia Dance Company under the direction of Toler and Donald Laney.
Maroney was a fully realized dancer whose heart and spirit shined through her impeccable technique. In the prime of Maroney’s career, her life was taken from her in act of violence on Oct. 2, 2011.
Many people grieve Maroney’s absence and many contributed to create two scholarship funds in her honor. One is at Connecticut College and the other is for The Trillium School for Performing Arts.
Maroney’s life and legacy continue to inspire all of those who were blessed to know her and those who were lifted by her stunning dance performances. Through these scholarship funds, Maroney’s profound influence will touch dancers who may never have been graced by her presence.
