Repairs to damaged wells, water systems or septic systems may be eligible for aid
If your private well or septic system was damaged or contaminated in the recent storms, you may be eligible for FEMA aid.
The well must be the sole source of water for the home to be eligible. The repairs must also not be covered by insurance.
Call the FEMA Helpline AT 1-800-621-3362 if you find damage to your water systems, even if an inspector has already visited your home.
Debris removal – call local officials first
If you’re cleaning up and cleaning out, give a call to your local officials before carting off debris.
As debris piles up, your local authority can tell you how best to safely dispose of them. Don’t block right of way, drains, or ditches.
Keep children away from debris piles that may contain broken glass, nails, hazardous waste, rattlesnakes, rodents, insects and bacteria.
FEMA does not endorse individuals or contractors for debris removal – so check with your own local authorities first before contracting removal.

Curbside flood pickup deadline
The deadline for free curbside flood material pickup in Greenbrier County is July 27. After July 27, all personal flood debris will need to be taken to the county dump sites. For any flood materials taken directly to the Greenbrier County Landfill, regular disposal rates will apply. For debris questions, call 304-645-5444.
Tax, government benefits unaffected by disaster aid
Accepting disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will not impact any of applicants’ government benefits.
FEMA assistance is not counted as income, so it will not increase your income tax bill or affect your eligibility for Medicaid, welfare, food stamps or aid to families with dependent children.
The disaster assistance you receive won’t affect your social security or Medicare either, and it won’t count against you in any benefit programs funded by the U.S. government.

Text messages for West Virginians from FEMA
When you register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), you can choose to receive updates to your smartphone or other device via text. You will start receiving those updates soon after you complete the registration process.
The official FEMA number sending messages to your device is 43362 and all notifications will contain the last four digits of your FEMA registration number at the beginning of the message (for example, FEMA ID####).
The messages you receive will include information such as when a determination of eligibility for federal aid is made or when any type of request letter has been mailed to you asking you to provide additional information to FEMA.
If you get a text requesting more information, log into your account on DisasterAssistance.gov for more details. If you don’t follow through, it may delay the assistance process.
If you get a text saying a FEMA-contracted housing inspector was unable to contact you, call the FEMA helpline as soon as possible at 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585. If you use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services, call 800-621-3362.
If you get a text saying your case has been updated, log onto your account on DisasterAssistance.gov to view the status update. You will receive this message when a decision has been made.
