The annual Area Catholic picnic, sponsored by the Alleghany Highlands Council 8689 Knights of Columbus, will be held at Shelter #1 of the picnic area in Greenbrier State Forest, two miles south of the Caldwell/White Sulphur Springs Exit off Interstate 64, on Sunday, July 17.
Open to all area Catholics and their families, the Knights will serve hamburgers, hot dogs, all the trimmings, and provide paper products, plastic ware, soft drinks, and bottled water. Those who can, announced Perk Berry of White Sulphur Springs, grand knight, are asked to bring a covered dish to share.
Lunch will be served at 2 p.m.
In addition, the St. Catherine of Siena Parish board game group from Ronceverte will join the gathering as well with all kinds of board games and some sports activities for the children. Swimming is available at the nearby GSF pool.
A vesper service at 4 p.m. will conclude the day’s activities, as arranged by Father James Conyers, pastoral assistant for the Catholic Churches of the Greenbrier Valley, and chaplain of the Alleghany Highlands Council.
“We are hoping all Catholics and their families from Greenbrier, Monroe, Pocahontas, Summers, eastern Fayette as well as Alleghany, Bath, and Craig counties, Va., will join us for the picnic,” Berry added, “And any family, no matter what religion, who was displaced by the floods are also invited to be our guests.”
As a result of the recent floods, there are some rough sections to the road leading to and through the Greenbrier State Forest, Berry noted, caution is recommended.
