The Ronceverte Historic Landmarks Commission and Main Street Ronceverte have announced the reopening of the Ronceverte Museum following a clean up from the most recent flooding. The space, located on Chestnut Street, adjacent to the Post Office, was reopened for business on Sunday, July 10.
The Ronceverte Museum was opened September 4, 2015 for the annual Heritage Festival and offers visitors a collection of memorabilia covering Ronceverte’s history, focusing on commercial, governmental, social and religious past. Since then the museum has continued to receive donations and items of historic interest allowing the town to piece together their history.
“We are so excited to have the museum open again”, says Sue Ella Miano with the Historic Landmarks Commission. “It is important to offer a glimpse of our past to visitors and to our young people so they can understand the importance of Ronceverte in the history of the county.”
“The reopening is an effort of several volunteers who came together to make ready this lovely space”, says Mayor David Smith. ‘It epitomizes the true pride our citizens have in preserving Ronceverte’s rich heritage”.
Most recent donations include the apothecary jars from Virginia Ellis’ Greenbrier Drug Store from December 31, 1931, a Ronceverte sign from the Gateway Hotel, and photos, batons and other items belonging to Noble Clay Legg, revered band director of Greenbrier High and Greenbrier Junior High Schools.
“These might not seem like very important items to many”, says Miano, “but each item brings together a time and experience during the history of Ronceverte which means much to those of us to recall a time when Ronceverte was a commercial center and was simply our home town.”
The museum is open Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m., or by appointment by calling 304-646-2880.
