Four of NASCAR’s top drivers will trade the steering wheel for a pitching wedge as they take part in the Official Wednesday Pro-Am for The Greenbrier Classic.
Denny Hamlin, Michael Waltrip, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and Austin Dillon will join other celebrities in the star-studded event on the eve of tournament play.
“NASCAR has a major appeal in West Virginia and surrounding states, and we’re thrilled that fans will get to see some of their favorite drivers right here at The Greenbrier Classic,” said Jim Justice, owner and CEO, The Greenbrier, and Chairman, The Greenbrier Classic. “I know we’ll have faithful supporters cheering them on, just as they do at the track.”
Hamlin is an ambassador for The Greenbrier and proudly wear’s the resort’s logo on his racing fire suit. The Chesterfield, Va., native is a regular on the Old White TPC.
In February, Hamlin won NASCAR’s ultimate race when he took the checkered flag just ahead of Martin Truex Jr., at the Daytona 500. The 2006 Nextel Cup Rookie of the Year has won 27 Sprint Cup races over 12 years and finished second in the points race in 2010. Hamlin drives the No. 11 FedEx Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing and is currently locked into The Chase for the Sprint Cup, which kicks off at Chicagoland Speedway Sept. 18.
Waltrip experienced a memorable career in racing, with 132 top 10 finishes over 32 years on the Sprint Cup Series. He won four races, including the Daytona 500 in 2001 and 2003. He’s driven in one race in each of the last five seasons, but his main focus now is on calling the action instead of getting behind the wheel. He is a popular NASCAR analyst for FOX.
Stenhouse Jr. drives the No. 17 Ford Fusion for Roush Fenway Racing. The 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year is still looking for his first Sprint Cup victory, but he has finished in the top 10 at NASCAR’s highest level 13 times. Stenhouse won the NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship in 2011 and 2012.
Dillon sits behind the wheel of one of the most famous cars in NASCAR history, the Richard Childress Racing No. 3 Chevrolet SS, made legendary by Dale Earnhardt. The grandson of Childress, Dillon was the 2013 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion and the 2011 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion. He’s still looking for his first Sprint Cup Series win but has 16 top 10 finishes. He’s currently 12th in the Sprint Cup Series Driver Standings.
