One of the most successful coaches in college football history will be back in his home state this summer to play in the Wednesday ProAm at The Greenbrier Classic.
Idamay, WV, native Nick Saban, who has won five national championships (four at Alabama and one at LSU), six SEC championships and a pair of Associated Press National Coach of the Year Awards, will tee it up on The Old White TPC Course on July 6, joining a long list of celebrities from sports and entertainment in the starstudded event.
“It doesn’t get any bigger than Nick Saban,” said Greenbrier Owner and Chairman Jim Justice. “He’s the best of the best when it comes to college football coaches, and we’re thrilled that he’s coming back to West Virginia to join us for what is going to be a fantastic day of golf.”
In 20 seasons as a college head coach, Saban has compiled and incredible 191601 record, including a head-turning 10018 mark in nine seasons at Alabama. In 2008, Forbes Magazine called Saban “The Most Powerful Coach in Sports.”
Saban’s West Virginia roots run deep. His father ran a service station in his Marion County hometown, just a few miles from Fairmont, and his mother ran an ice cream shop. He grew up a Mountaineer fan, watching stars like Jerry West, and even coached defensive backs for WVU in 1978 and 1979.
“I am looking forward to returning to my home state of West Virginia for The Greenbrier Classic ProAm,” said Saban. “The Greenbrier is one of the best events on the PGA TOUR, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to tee it up at The Old White TPC Course.”
Saban will join two other legendary coaches in the ProAm as College Football Hall of Famer and former WVU head coach Don Nehlen and Beckley native and former Marshall coach Bob Pruett are also scheduled to play.
NBA icon Shaquille O’Neal, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee and Duck Dynasty stars Willie Robertson, Jase Robertson and Justin Martin are among the other celebrities that have been announced for the ProAm.
The Greenbrier Classic is in its seventh year as a PGA TOUR FedExCup event. It will be held July 4-10, and for the first time fans will be admitted free for all seven days of tournament action. To register for a free grounds pass, visit GreenbrierClassic.com.
