At the regular meeting of the West Virginia State Fire Commission on June 3 in Charleston, the Fire Commission ruled that the Greenbrier Valley Rural Volunteer Fire Department located in Talcott had not met the requirements for training and equipment certification as outlined by the Fire Commission after an inspection conducted by the Fire Marshal’s Office on Mar. 18.
Due to non-compliance with these requirements the West Virginia State Fire Commission has revoked their certification as a volunteer fire department. The Greenbrier Valley Rural Volunteer Fire Department is now officially closed by order of the West Virginia State Fire Commission.
Until such time that a new volunteer fire department can be formed and in operation the citizens of the Talcott area will be served by the three bordering departments. These departments are Forest Hill Vol. Fire Dept., Summers County Vol. Fire Dept. and Tri-County Vol. Fire Dept. The other Summers County volunteer departments have agreed to provide assistance as needed, these departments are J.B. Nimitz VFD, Green Sulphur District VFD and Pipestem VFD.
The Summers County Firefighters Association, the Summers County Commission, and the Summers County Emergency Operations Center want to assure the citizens of the Talcott area that we will continue to provide fire service to this area until a new department can be formed and certified.
Any questions concerning this matter should be directed to the West Virginia State Fire Commission at 304-558-2191.
