Special Olympics athletes score in Morgantown

Special Olympics Greenbrier County athletes returned victorious from their trip to the State Special Olympics Basketball Tournament and Cheerleading Competition in Morgantown. The basketball team played multiple games and earned a second place silver medal in their division. Members of the team are Caleb Alder, Stacey Brinson, Brad Burns, Jefferson Fraley, Brian Luchsinger, Wesley Mummert, Travis Schutzmann, Gabriel Snow, Anna Van Meter and Shane Van Meter. Their coach is Patrick Walker.

Joseph Canterbury brought home a silver medal for the basketball skills competition. He demonstrated his ability to dribble the basketball, shoot from various locations at the basket, and to throw the ball to a designated area. His coach is John Miller, Jr.

Cheerleaders Suzanna Berger, Tiffany Brewster, Trisha Baynard, Johnna Miller, Josie Sams, Misty Scitzs, and Jennie Weikle scored bronze medals for their dance routine and fourth place ribbons for their sideline and floor cheers. Their coaches were Cassidi Hall and Rebecca Canterbury.

Athletes are preparing for Summer Games in June. They will participate in track and field events, tennis and cornhole (baggo).

Greenbrier County Special Olympics offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities comprehensive year-round training and competition in Olympic-type sports. It is open to all people with intellectual disabilities who are at least 8 years old, regardless of the degree of their disability. You don’t have to live in Greenbrier County to participate. Athletes from nearby counties are invited to join. Athletes interested in participating in Special Olympics may contact John R. Miller, Jr. at 304-646-0579.
