The field for the 2016 Greenbrier Classic is starting to take form, and among the early commitments are two of the most recognized figures in professional golf.
Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson and the successful and colorful John Daly will compete in the PGA Tour FedExCup event, which will celebrate its seventh anniversary this year, when it’s played July 4 through July 10 on The Old White TPC Course at The Greenbrier.
Watson, a Greenbrier ambassador and Greenbrier Sporting Club member, is currently No. 4 in the Official World Golf Rankings. He won the Northern Trust Open on Feb. 21 for his ninth career win on the PGA Tour.
This will be Watson’s fourth appearance in The Greenbrier Classic, and he has improved his finish in each of the first three. He finished 5-under-par and tied for 30th in his debut in 2013, and moved up to a tie for 16th in 2014, finishing 7-under-par. Last year, Watson finished 10-under for the tournament to tie for 13th.
Daly, a five-time PGA Tour winner, who captured the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship, was the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 1991 and the PGA Tour Comeback Player of the Year in 2004. He’s known for his distance off the tee, as well as his trademark “Loud Mouth” clothing, which has included American flag pants at past Greenbrier Classics.
Daly, who turns 50 later this month, will make his PGA Tour Champions debut in May, but he was granted an exemption into The Greenbrier Classic, which has been on his schedule since its debut in 2010.
Daly’s best finish at The Greenbrier Classic came in 2012 when he tied for 12th.
