Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT), the State Professional Theatre of West Virginia, presents “You Can’t Take It with You” by Broadway dream team George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. This classic farce runs Apr. 8 and 9, 14-16 and 21-23 at 7:30 p.m. with a Pay-What-You-Can Preview performance Apr. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee performance Apr. 23 at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $30 for general admission, $27 for seniors and $20 for children/students. For tickets or more information, call GVT’s Box Office at 304-645-3838 or visit www.gvtheatre.org.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart showcases their time-tested recipe for quirky comedy with three generations of the Sycamore family living under one roof. Fireworks ignite when daughter Alice brings her fiancé and his straight-laced parents home to meet her endearing family. You can’t help but leave the theatre smiling.

In everything from dancing to tax evasion, the Sycamores do exactly as they please. This disregard sets the stage for the humor that has made this a classic American production.

Pamela Paul, recently seen in GVT’s 2015 production of “Veronica’s Room,” portrays Penelope Sycamore, the matriarch of this oddball family.

“My family had a few real characters, but nothing like these people,” Paul said.

Paul has described her character as an airhead but also noted that Penelope is behind all of the unconditional love surrounding each member of her unique family.

“They are each in kind of a separate world, but surrounded by tremendous love for one another. Penny is, I suppose, likely the one who started this arrangement, as everyone else but her father came into the household later – and for the first twenty years of her life was living very differently, buried in work,” Paul said.

Though the Sycamores try their best to stay in line for Alice, the unexpected arrival of a few extra guests brings their true natures to light. The chaos and absurdity that follows is a comedic formula perfected by Moss and Hart keeping audiences gripping their sides all night long.
