The Greenbrier Historical Society is sponsoring a unique, two-day event Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21. In cooperation with the New River Community and Technical College, the grounds of Academy Park in Lewisburg will come alive with Native American drumming, dancing, culture and history. The purpose of this inter-tribal gathering is to provide the Native American community with the space to come together to reaffirm tribal ties and customs while at the same time offer an interactive educational opportunity to schools and the community to experience Indian culture in action.
The public is welcome from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The traditional Circle will be the main focal point for activities and presentations. At 12 noon the Red River Drum, a living spirit, teaching and Pow-Wow drum, will open the Circle. Veterans will lead the Grand Entry into the Circle and present the colors. Traditional dancing will follow and continue throughout the day. There will also be West Virginia Humanities Council History Alive presentations at the Circle by Chief Cornstalk and Sacajawea. Other activities around the campus will be Flying Higher Birds of Prey demonstrations, learning lodges and modules about Native American Culture and Heritage as well as historical exhibits and vendors. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions to better understand this important, living part of America’s story.
Teachers, plan your field trip now for Friday, May the 20. There will be interactive opportunities for students. Have fun and fulfill some of your CSOs at the same time.
Dancers, join the Circle! $25 will be awarded to the first 25 dancers in full regalia. All traditional drums are welcome.
This educational and family oriented experience is free and open to the public. No alcohol or drugs. Greenbrier Historical Society welcomes vendors as well as the financial support of community sponsors for this event.
