For the first time, New River Community and Technical College will offer workforce classes in Rainelle starting in March.
Thanks to a partnership between the City of Rainelle and New River CTC, a variety of community and workforce education programs will be held at the city’s Town Hall. Community surveys were distributed in 2015 to assess what types of courses would be most beneficial. The initial courses selected are Residential Wiring, starting Mar. 8, and School Bus and Passenger Commercial Driver’s License, starting Mar. 15.
“We realize that transportation to our Greenbrier Valley Campus in Lewisburg can be difficult and hope to bring a variety of new opportunities closer to home for residents of western Greenbrier County. We hope that these courses will provide skills and training that people need to find good jobs and enhance their quality of life in the county,” said Joey Hazelwood, interim director of Workforce, Technical, and Community Education at New River Community and Technical College.
The Residential Wiring class will provide training for anyone interested in learning about installation and repair of electrical wiring for residential housing. Topics covered during the course will include: how electricity works, basic residential wiring, how to size wires, panel boxes, overload device functions, and lighting controls. The six-week course starts Mar. 8 and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rainelle Town Hall on Kanawha Avenue, Room 1233. The cost is $250 and pre-registration is requested by Mar. 4.
The School Bus and Passenger CDL class will provide training hours needed to test for the state licensing test. Possible job opportunities include school bus, sanitation, maintenance, bus, and dump truck drivers. Topics covered during the course will include: procedures for loading and unloading passengers, emergency response, and road safety precautions. Participants must be at least 18 years of age, have had a driver’s license for two years, and have a CDL Learners Permit. CDL Learners Permit applications and study materials are available to be picked up at Rainelle City Hall. The course will be held Mar. 15-17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Town Hall on Kanawha Avenue, Room 1233. The cost is $450 per person, plus $90 to test from the College’s certified test course in Ghent. Pre-registration is requested by Mar. 11.
