While Desiree Bullock was a student at Greenbrier East High School she took classes at New River Community and Technical College, allowing her to earn an associate degree in less than a year.
She graduated from Greenbrier East High School in May 2015 and graduated with her associate of science in Business in December 2015. She plans to continue her education and pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business from West Virginia University.
“I went to high school until 11 a.m. and then went to college in the afternoon,” Bullock said. She also took online classes at the college during summer break.
Each year, about 200 high school students take classes at New River Community and Technical College. Students are able to take a list of approved dual credit courses, which meet high school and community college graduation requirements.
High school students may take college classes while they are in high school, if they have an overall G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher. They also must submit an application for admission and a provisional student permission form, which requires a recommendation from a high school principal and signature from a parent or legal guardian. Another option for high school students interested in earning college credit is through the EDGE credit program, geared toward students interested in technical programs.
“My mom is happy. I saved a lot of money starting at community college,” Bullock said. She said the faculty at New River CTC were supportive, and the small classes were helpful to learn the course material. She praised Professor of Business Lizabeth Rogers for encouraging her to continue with an associate degree from New River CTC.
“Desiree is a bright student, who is ready for the challenges of a bachelor’s degree. She is planning for a career in the corporate business world, and I am confident in her leadership qualities,” Rogers said.
