• Global Warming, Herbal Healing courses rescheduled
A presentation about climate change, “Global Warming – A Realistic Look to the Future,” has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Room 385, Scott Hall, on the DSLCC campus in Clifton Forge, VA. Also, the presentation will be broadcast live via compressed video at the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center in Buena Vista. There is no charge, and the public is invited to attend.

• Clinical Medical Assistant
Dabney S. Lancaster Community College is offering two 140-hour non-credit Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) courses in two locations this spring semester. Both begin in late February. On the Clifton Forge campus, the class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 6 to 9:30 pm, and six Saturdays, beginning Tuesday, Feb. 23, through May 26, in Room 502, McCarthy Hall.
At the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center in Buena Vista, the class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays in Room 905, also from 6-9:30 p.m., and six Saturdays, beginning Monday, Feb. 29, through June 6.
Students will learn to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare.
Classroom lecture and hands-on labs are included, as well as a 160-hour clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the course, submit to a thorough background check and drug screening and meet other requirements. Upon successful completion of the CMA course, students would be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination. The tuition fee of $2,599 covers books and other supplies, but not the cost of taking the CCMA national exam.

• Intro to Computers
Dabney S. Lancaster Community College is offering Introduction to Computers I through its non-credit program this month in two locations. Ed Mays is the instructor. The three-session course will be held at the DSLCC Rockbridge Center in Buena Vista on Tuesdays, Feb. 16 and 23, and Mar. 1, and on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus in Room 504, McCarthy Hall, on Wednesdays, Feb. 17 and 24, and Mar. 2. Both classes will meet from 6-8:30 p.m.
This course is for anyone with little computer experience; keyboarding skills are helpful. The tuition fee is $65. The accompanying textbook is “Welcome to Microsoft Office 2013” and may be purchased in the DSLCC bookstore on the main campus or at the DSLCC Rockbridge Center prior to class

• Intro to Lightroom Photography
“Introduction to Adobe Lightroom”, a five-week non-credit photography course is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m., in Room 504, McCarthy Hall. Professional photographer Chuck Almarez, owner of Fire and Light Gallery in Clifton Forge is the instructor.
Adobe Lightroom is an organizational tool with significant editing and output capabilities. It has become the industry standard for serious photographers from around the world.
Students will learn how to import, organize, rate and tag images, and then output them in a variety of ways: print, slideshow, books, and web galleries. By the end of this course students should understand how to import their images into Lightroom; how to edit, refine, or get creative using Lightroom tools; and how to output images from Lightroom to a variety of destinations. The software will be installed on college computers, but it is recommended that students install Lightroom on their own personal laptop computers and bring them to class. Tuition is $180.
