Lewisburg’s city council meeting Tuesday evening was a continuation of the Friday, Jan. 15, 8 a.m. emergency meeting regarding litigation issues surrounding Ordinance 254 Non Discrimination. The second reading and public hearing scheduled for that evening at the Alumni Center at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine was postponed as a result.
Lewisburg Mayor John Manchester announced at the beginning of the meeting that he and the city council meinbers, together with attorney Jesse Guills, would hold a continuation of the Lewisburg Emergency Council meeting of Jan. 15. The purpose of that continued meeting was to review additional recently received legal research regarding Ordinance 254, Non Discrimination.
With that announcement, the mayor entertained a motion to go into executive session. He said, further, he did not know whether a decision would be made following the session.
After three hours in session with their attorney, the council emerged at 10:15 p.m. with little information to disclose to the press as predicted. Manchester said attorney Guills would continue to research and make legal inquiries to address potential litigation issues against the city.
Manchester said that upon the advice of Guills, the council voted, while in emergency session, to hold the second reading and public hearing of Ordinance 254 on Monday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Roland P. Sharp Alumni Center at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. More information about timing, location and parking will be posted in the usual media channels, the mayor said.
