Family Court Judge David M. Sanders announces his candidacy for re-election to the position of Family Court Judge of the 15th Circuit, which is comprised of Greenbrier and Monroe counties. Judge Sanders has served as Family Court Judge since being appointed to the position by then-governor Joe Manchin in May of 2007. He was elected to this position in November 2008.
Prior to becoming Family Court Judge, Sanders worked nearly 19 years for Legal Aid of West Virginia (formerly West Virginia Legal Services Plan, Inc.) as a staff attorney, managing attorney and supervising attorney in their Parkersburg and Lewisburg offices. While at Legal Aid, he provided legal representation in civil cases for clients who were unable to afford an attorney, and supervised other staff attorneys and support staff. He also worked as a litigator for the firm of Jacobs & Chandler in Parkersburg.
Sanders earned a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and a Master’s degree in Industrial Safety from Marshall University, and received his Law degree in 1986 from the West Virginia University College of Law. He is also a veteran of the United States Navy, having served from 1968 to 1972, when he was honorably discharged.
A native of Ashland, KY, Sanders has lived nearly all of his adult life in West Virginia. He resided in Huntington, Morgantown and Parkersburg before moving to Lewisburg in 1996 to become the managing attorney for the Lewisburg office of Legal Aid of West Virginia. He married Barbara Johnson in 1997 and they made their home on the family farm formerly owned by Barbara’s parents, Jimmy and Betty Johnson, just outside of Alderson in the Blue Sulphur Springs area of Greenbrier County.
Sanders is an Elder and Clerk of the Session of the Alderson Presbyterian Church and a member of the Lewisburg Elks Lodge.
The purpose of the Family Court is to provide a forum where each citizen will be treated with respect and dignity, and receive a fair and timely decision on the issue that brings him or her to the Court. Judge Sanders believes that his many years of experience practicing family law and serving as Family Court Judge these past eight and a half years enables him to serve the people of Greenbrier and Monroe Counties in the best and most efficient manner possible.
