He was a compassionate physician dedicated to helping others lead healthier lives. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lynn Brody; son, Tryg Brody; daughter-in-law, Sara Brody; and grandchildren, August and Sasha Brody.
His brother, Eugene B. Brody of Baltimore, MD, preceded him in death.
Dr. Brody, enjoyed a variety of different kinds of exercise including skiing, tennis, dancing and walking around Lewisburg with his wife. They were “world travelers” and their favorite destination was France. Dr. Brody studied French and enjoyed having conversation with the French people.
Dr. Brady was born in Columbia, MO. He was educated at the University of Missouri and obtained his M.D. degree from Washington University in St. Louis. This was followed by internship and residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He then spent five years in the U.S. Army, which led him to Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC, a position as Chief of Medical Services at Cannstadt, Germany, and finally at Fort Lee, in Virginia.
In 1956, he joined The Greenbrier Clinic at The Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs. This unique clinic’s reputation was built on diagnostic skills of carefully selected physicians, and Dr. Brody was instrumental in engendering this reputation. He led the clinic as Medical Director for 12 years, until age 65, and continued to practice at the clinic until age 75, retiring after 44 years of dedicated service. Dr. Brody built an enormous practice and was loved by his employees and colleagues, as well as thousands of patients.
Dr. Brody is a fellow in The American College of physicians, as well as The Americans College of Cardiology. His article in The Journal of American Medical Association on Master’s Two-Step Stress Testing is still cited in the literature. He served as president of The Greenbrier Valley Medical Association and The West Virginia Section of Internal Medicine. He was a first class medical examiner for The Federal Aviation Administration and served on state and local boards.
An endowment has been established at the West Virginia School of Medicine, for the Arnold J. Brody Scholarship, to provide scholarships for students who are residents of West Virginia.
