Caldwell-Elmer “Ray” Shafer, 89, passed away Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Virginia.
Born Oct. 25, 1925, at Caldwell, he was the last surviving child of the late George Edward and Flora Boone Shafer.
Ray was a graduate of Greenbrier High School, a retired Postmaster, member and Deacon of Zion’s Light Baptist Church, a member of Modern Woodsmen of America, The Gideons International, and a U.S. Navy Veteran.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Rosaline Phillips Shafer; an infant son, Gregory Scott Shafer; sisters, Anilee Diem and Louise Holley; and brothers, Ovid, Paul, Earl, Royd, Harold, Billy, Bob and Joe Shafer.
He is survived by: daughters, Connie Hedrick (William) of Frankford, Bonnie Hamilton (Alex) of Warrington, PA, Julie Wood (Scott Graham) of Lewisburg, and Rhonda McCombs (Stephen) of Lynchburg, VA; grandchildren, Travis Hedrick (Holly), Todd Hedrick, Alexander Hamilton, Scott Hamilton, Davis Wood, Owen Wood, Olivia McCombs, Conner McCombs; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 22, at Zion’s Light Baptist Church in Ronceverte, where Rev. Gary Baker officiated. Interment followed in the McLean Cemetery.
The family received friends Wednesday evening, Oct. 21, at the church.
