Summer camp is a rite of passage for many kids. However, not all are as fortunate as those throughout West Virginia who are able to take part in the Governor’s Youth Opportunity Adventure Camp program each summer.
Four six-day sessions are conducted at Camp Horseshoe, where 7-to-12 year olds take part in kid-friendly outdoor activities including swimming, creek walking and nature hiking, along with access to the arts and reading. Home-cooked meals served family style are always a daily highlight with purposeful activities from rise and shine to lights out.
AmeriCorps members serve as counselors, and all are impacted by the children that they meet. “Every week brings a new set of impressionable minds that we can help mold into tomorrow’s leaders,” said counselor Hannah Gibson. “The joy and excitement these kids experience is incredible,” said counselor Michael Riffle. Counselor Miles Smith added, “Campers come away from summer with new games to play and new skills to take into their lives back home today and in their adult lives.”
Horseshoe serves statewide and beyond. For information call 304-478-2481, or check out web page at http://www.yla-youthleadership.org/Horseshoe.html.
