Communities In Schools has been “stuffing the bus” in Greenbrier County for over a decade and 2015 was another successful year for the local school supply drive. Greenbrier County Schools’ busses were parked at the Lewisburg Wal-Mart and Rainelle Kroger for the community to fill with much needed supplies for local students. During the four-day campaign, July 23-26, the community gave cash and in-kind donations to help kids start the school year off on the right foot. Three ring binders, paper, pens, pencils, spiral notebooks, calculators, flash drives, backpacks, crayons, glue sticks and markers – all the tools students need in the classroom – were collected. The Communities In Schools team sorted and distributed the donations to all 13 schools in the county. Many local organizations and businesses supported the campaign by providing volunteers, including Robert C. Byrd Clinic, GVMC, the Chamber of Commerce, Genesis HealthCare “The Seasons,” State Military Authority, Rainelle Medical Center, Ream Properties, Greenbrier County Schools, Greenbrier Technologies and the Family Refuge Center. In total, 37 volunteers gave over 100 hours of their time to help “Stuff the Bus.” A special thank you goes to the Energy Express staff from Rainelle Elementary for partnering to promote the event in and around Rainelle as well as providing volunteers.
The contribution of these items may seem small but in reality they help remove a basic barrier to student success in the classroom, allowing teachers to spend their time teaching and students to spend their time learning. Communities In Schools of Greenbrier County would like to thank everyone in the area who came out to support our schools and our students.
