Local dog trainer Janine Lazarus spoke to Lewisburg Rotarians on Monday and answered some great questions about all things dog training. A few of the more notable comments to questions include the following: When a dog sits, that is a trick. Dogs do not need to sit in nature; they only do it to please us. Wolf hybrids are a bad idea, period. The best age to separate a puppy from the mother is 11 to 12 weeks. The bite inhibition training can come naturally from the litter siblings and mom by 11 weeks as litter-mates protest being bitten by one another, and mom will correct the behavior as well. Taking a puppy home at the conventional eight weeks is fine but then the owner has to teach bite inhibition. Lazarus also stated, “Dogs have a tendency to live only in the present, which makes them so amenable to training even after aging with bad habits, or experiencing abuse.”
