October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, supporting survivors and remembering those whose lives have been affected or lost because of domestic violence.
Domestic violence can affect individuals and families from every background and community. Abuse may take many forms, including physical violence, emotional or verbal abuse, intimidation, financial control and other behaviors intended to gain power or control over another person.
Throughout October, communities are encouraged to wear purple, share information about available resources and help bring attention to an issue that often remains hidden behind closed doors. The month also serves as an important reminder to listen to survivors with compassion and without judgment.
Everyone can play a role in creating safer communities by recognizing warning signs, supporting those who may be experiencing abuse and encouraging them to seek assistance from trusted local resources.
For anyone experiencing domestic violence, help is available. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached 24 hours a day at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or by texting START to 88788.
This October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month reminds us that awareness, education and community support can help survivors know they are not alone and that assistance is available.
