At the regular monthly meeting of the White Sulphur Springs City Council on Monday, Sept. 14, Mayor Taylor read a resolution the council issued to recognize and congratulate St. Thomas Episcopal Church on its 140th Anniversary since its founding in 1886. The resolution bestows the City’s Highest Commendation on St. Thomas Episcopal Church, its leadership, clergy and congregation.
The council’s financial report revealed the city finished the month of August with a surplus in its general fund as well as its water and sewer funds. When reported as a year to date (YTD) metric, each of those funds maintains a surplus.
As part of the report on Infrastructure, Councilperson Audrey VanBuren advised the city’s swimming pool has had a good year. Recorder David Dillon asked residents, with the changing of seasons, to keep an eye on their drains and other areas for decluttering if necessary. Dillon advised citizens to contact the city if they need help doing so.
The council approved measures for payments related to ongoing projects to include the Mapledale Water Storage Tank, The Ridges and the Bike Park.
In new business, the council briefly discussed a requested change to the lease terms of the cell tower on Mill Hill Drive. The council agreed to table the discussion pending consultation with the city’s attorney.
Mayor Taylor advised Lt. J.R. Byer was appointed to the position of Police Chief on Sept. 9. Taylor advised the vacancy for the chief position was created by the recent departure of the previous chief but did not elaborate further.
City Hall and Police Department offices will be closed on Monday, Oct. 12, in observance of Columbus Day. Garbage collection scheduled for Monday, Oct. 12 will occur on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
The next White Sulphur Springs City Council meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
