On Thursday, Sept. 10, the Alderson Town Council provided information on the water projects that include both a new water plant and expansion and rehabilitation of water lines.
The water plant portion of the project is estimated to be 83% complete with construction of a new tank starting soon. As for the water line segment of the project, materials for the construction of the project, piping and related materials will be arriving in Alderson during the week of Sept. 21.
The council announced the dates for the Alderson Special Urban Deer Archery Season (A-SPURS). The season is from Sept. 5 through Dec. 31, 2026 and Jan. 11 through Jan. 31, 2027.
The WVDNR legalized urban archery hunts in 1996. According to wvdnr.gov, urban deer archery hunts provide additional hunting opportunities and help control deer populations.
In a WVDNR press release from 2020, a WVDNR wildlife biologist said “As deer populations grew, we saw an increase in vehicle collisions and got complaints from homeowners. By allowing hunters to come in and harvest deer in these areas, they can help alleviate the problem in their community.”
Alderson is currently the only municipality in Greenbrier County to allow Urban Deer Archery Season. In addition to having a valid WV Hunting License, hunters must apply for and receive a permit from the Town of Alderson to participate in the program.
The council had a first reading of a proposal to address food truck licensing. While the first reading was moved forward, the council expressed a need to gather additional information before finalizing the ordinance.
In other business, the council approved an upgrade of the lock systems of both city hall and the fire station, noting the cost would be shared between the town and the fire station. Council also approved the appointment of Melissa Stidom to the Alderson Public Library Board of Trustees.
The next scheduled meeting of the Alderson Town Council is Thursday, Oct. 8.
