It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of Thomas “Tom” Michael Cardis on May 27, 2026.

Born June 29, 1945, in Indianapolis, IN, to the late Frank and Eleanora (Koers) Cardis. Tom grew up in a large, lively, and supportive family. Tom and the family were always very active and supportive of the community and church. Tom is survived by his wife and best friend, Sheila (Olohan); sons Michael (Liz), and Daniel (Payton) and William (Robin); and his brother John and sisters-in-law Phyllis Cardis and Janine Cardis.

We take comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved son, Thomas (Gwen), as well as his siblings Frank Cardis, Mary Alice Pluckebaum, James Cardis, Richard Cardis, Rose McGowan and Nora Thompson. Tom was also the proud grandfather of Drew, Davis, Liam and Bertie Lane, and a beloved uncle to three dozen nieces and nephews.

Tom was a retired chemical engineer, earning a Bachelor’s degree from Marian University and a Masters degree in analytical chemistry from Roosevelt University. He lived a life defined by laughter, generosity, and a passion for sports. He was also a gifted poet, and to many in the community, Tom was more than a friend. He and Sheila never closed their door to those in need, and their home was a known sanctuary for many. Tom’s kind heart, wry sense of humor, and signature smirks and winks will be missed most of all.

A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date. Our family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the community for the overwhelming support provided during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Carilion Clinic Hospice in Roanoke, Virginia or Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg, WV.

“Dahlia”

Your crooked, wry smile

Is right up there

With the best-looking dahlia.

Better than a sunflower

Reaching for the sky.

A smile that greeted any vagabond, rascal, friend.

Friend of a friend, a stray kitty cat.

Any neighbor, family who knocked on your Church Street door.

You were always there.

Always there.

Thanksgiving at SPN. Weddings.

Graduations. Riverside. Last rites.

In goodness and sorrow.

Your constellation of family and friends

Is bigger than the stars at night

With as many miles on the road

To always be there.

In goodness and sorrow.

And now we cry, cry, cry.

For now, until we meet again.

Greeted by that wry, crooked smile.

– By Tom’s niece,

Julia Cardis
