Janet Mae Hoover Johnson, 78, of Lewisburg, WV, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, May 17, 2026. The daughter of the late William Gates and Ollie Mae Jackson Hoover, she was born on Sept. 29, 1947, and grew up on a farm in Organ Cave, WV.

Janet was a graduate of Greenbrier High School and Greenbrier College for Women.

She lived a life committed to service – to her family, friends, church and community. She was a member and elder of the Salem Presbyterian Church and faithfully attended Sewell Valley Baptist Church during her time living in Rainelle. Janet worked several early years in the banking industry and retired from the City of Lewisburg after 28 years. She was a dedicated member of the Rainelle Volunteer Fire Department Firemanettes for over 30 years. She wholeheartedly supported her daughters in school and extracurricular activities. Janet was a talented baker making birthday and wedding cakes from scratch for many years.

She was involved in 4-H from the time she was a youth member earning her All Star pin and was recently recognized for 45 years of service to the Greenbrier County 4-H program. She was also a dedicated member of the Community Educational Outreach Service program both in the Rainelle and Organ Cave clubs for 50 years. Janet also served on the Greenbrier County Youth Camp board for many years. After retirement her creative energy was spent making quilts for family and 4-H fundraisers. Her greatest loves were her family and church family.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Charles Lee Johnson.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Charlena Johnson Moul (Robert) of Statesville, NC and Marilea Johnson Butcher (Matthew) of Renick; grandson, Alex Moul; granddaughter, Emily Moul; and great-granddaughter, Skylar Rayne all of Statesville, NC; sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson Hunter (Kermit) of Rainelle; brother-in-law, Jerry Johnson of Tampa, FL; nieces, Christina Martin and Susan Simms; her special cousin whom she considered her sister, Nancy Duffee of Richmond, VA; as well as a host of close cousins, relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 21, from 6-8 p.m. at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 22, at Salem Presbyterian Church at Organ Cave with Rev. Kristi Shay Moore and Pastor Kermit Hunter, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Salem Presbyterian Church at P.O. Box 71, Ronceverte, WV 24970 or to the Greenbrier County 4-H Leaders Association at P.O. Box 586, Lewisburg, WV 24901.
