Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT) is once again thrilled to present The Met: Live in HD Season with Gabriela Lena Frank’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego on June 13 at 1:30 p.m.
The Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season continues with El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego by 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Music – and Latin Grammy Award-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank and Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz, both making their Met debuts. Deborah Colker directs the Met premiere, which is conducted by the Met’s Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The opera’s magical-realist plot imagines Frida Kahlo returning from the underworld on the Mexican Day of the Dead to confront her unfaithful husband, Diego Rivera, and relive their tumultuous love. The opera is sung in Spanish.
“Frieda’s marriage to muralist Diego Rivera has been compared to that of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, tumultuous, often public, loving deeply and driving each other mad,” says Jann Holwick, GVT Board Member and MET enthusiast. “Theirs is a journey remembering love, pain, emotions, and losses inflicted on each other. The set and costumes deeply echo their art, culture, and Frida’s own imagery, rich in color, visually seductive, dreamlike and magical.”
The opera stars three-time Grammy Award–winning mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Frida and baritone Carlos Álvarez as Diego. The cast also features soprano Gabriella Reyes as Catrina, mistress of the underworld, and countertenor Nils Wanderer as the artist Leonardo in his Met debut.
In addition to Colker, the creative team includes set and co-costume designer Jon Bausor, co-costume designer Wilberth Gonzalez in his Met debut, and lighting designer Adam Silverman.
Gary Halvorson will direct the Live in HD presentation for cinemas, and Angel Blue will host the transmission, sharing exclusive behind-the-scenes content and interviews during intermission.
