Evelyn Mae Fortney, 75, of Valley Head formerly of White Sulphur Springs passed away on May 14, 2026 at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 8, 1950 in Ronceverte, the daughter of the late Charles and Hazel Donovan Hutchison, Jr.

Evelyn was a homemaker. She enjoyed embroidery, cross stitch and sewing and made pillows for her family She was an amazing Aunt who selflessly helped to raise many nieces and nephews. She was an excellent cook who made the absolute Best macaroni and cheese. She was loved by all who knew her and her loss will deeply be felt by those closest to her. She is irreplaceable as are her bear hugs and her love for all things purple.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband John Bittinger, son-in-law Russell Florida; granddaughters Jasmine Dawn Fortney and Katalina Harrison; nephews Donovan Gahm; Dereck Fortney, Eric Sturdivant and great-nephew Joshua Fortney, brothers-in-law Richard Fortney and Donald Fortney.

Surviving are her husband of 30 years Delmas Clyde Fortney; her step children; Norma Florida of Warren, OH, Katie Kramer of Valley Head, Delmas “JR” Fortney of Mill Creek and Zachary Fortney (Kayla) of Valley Head; sister, Jennie Burns (David) of Virginia; Nieces and nephews, Melanie Lee and Becky Burns, Timothy “T.W.” Bittinger (Jennifer), Christina Weese (Bill), Leah Spence, Dale Bittinger (Karen), Delphia Coppersmith (William), Alisha Marshall (Kelly), Olivia Spence and Megan Bittinger; Tim Cogar, Phillip Cogar, Jeremy Fortney, Matthew Fortney, David Bennett, Wayne Bennett, Theresa Bennett, Daniel Welch, Lisa Welch, Dustin Fortney, Donnie Fortney, Brian Fortney, Jennifer Skiles and Jessie Boyce. Sisters-in-law Agnes Spence (George) and Anna Bernstein; brother-in-law Timothy Bittinger, sisters-in-law Janet Bennet (Howard, Mary Tricket (James) and Billie Robinson (Rick), brothers-in-law, Jerry Fortney (Connie) and Harold Fortney (Joan Pifer). Great nieces and nephews; too numerous to name.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 19, at 2 PM at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel in White Sulphur Springs, interment will follow at the Mapledale Cemetery.

The family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, May 19, from 12 noon until time of services.
