Linda Asmann (neé Volk) of Alderson, WV passed away Apr. 11, 2026 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the late Filippa (Fannie) Patti and Vladimiro (Laddie) Volk, born in the Bronx, NY, Jan. 14, 1947. She was of the Lutheran faith and most recently attended Christ our Savior of the Valley Lutheran church in Alderson.
She was a proud graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx and attended Duke University and other colleges during her long career in civil service.
She married Ulrich (Uli) Asmann in 1966. In the summer of 1974, they drove past an abandoned Hudson River mansion in Newburgh, NY and felt a calling. They saved this building (variously called the Tuscan Villa or Hasbrouck House) from Urban Renewal’s planned demolition. Together they formed the Newburgh Preservation Association and worked to save many historic buildings, wrote preservation grants and researched the history of Newburgh’s architecture and notable families. Linda wrote the monthly newsletter and Ulrich ran the organization which grew to involve many other notable preservationists and historians.
Linda was instrumental in developing the Language Learning Laboratory at USMA West Point and later relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida where she retired from the V.A. at Bay Pines. In Florida, she and Uli were active in the local Orchid and Hibiscus societies, growing and exhibiting exotic flowers.
They later moved to Madisonville, TN, where they built and ran the College Street Bakery. They were active in several community groups and continued to grow orchids and hibiscus. After Uli’s passing in 2022, Linda decided to make Alderson her new home.
Linda and Uli were well matched, sharing many common interests that persisted, decade after decade together. They were architecture and genealogy researchers, horticulturists, gifted painters, authors, and most of all, collectors and historians of patterned glass. Linda was also an avid quilter. For the last few years she served as librarian for the Fiber Arts Network in nearby Lewisburg.
Linda is survived by her children: Christine Asmann and partner Tom France of Fort Spring, WV; Mark Asmann and wife Karen of Camden, SC ; Eric Asmann and partner Stefanie Montalvo of New Windsor, NY. Grandchildren Gianni, Veronica and Kallirose Asmann of New Windsor, Cayden Asmann of West Nyack, NY.
All are welcome to attend a graveside memorial service at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the Alderson Cemetery, with Pastor Becker officiating. Alderson Cemetery Road, Alderson, WV 24910
The arrangements have been respectfully entrusted to Lobban Funeral Home. Condolences and Memories may be shared with the Asmann family at www.lobbanfh.com
