Rose Ann Moody Defibaugh, 79, born Feb. 21, 1947, in Ronceverte, WV, passed away on Apr. 3, 2026, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and active member of her community, remembered for her kindness, faith, and dedication.
Rose worked for several years as a waitress at The Greenbrier, where she was known for her warm hospitality and commitment to excellent service. Beyond her career, she was passionate about traveling, spending cherished time with her grandchildren, and nurturing her deep faith in Christ as a member of New Covenant Sanctuary. Her hobbies reflected a vibrant and engaged spirit: she loved flowers and gardening, enjoyed doing puzzles, daily devotions, and playing cards and Yahtzee.
Rose is survived by her husband of 62 years, George Eli Defibaugh, Sr., with whom she shared a lifelong partnership grounded in love and mutual support. Together, they built a strong family that includes their children – Secora Sutphin; George Defibaugh, Jr., and his wife Jackie; Christopher “Danny” Defibaugh and his wife Trish; Barbara Sparks and her husband Mark; and Carol Clay and her husband Dale. She was deeply proud of her grandchildren Heather, Christopher, Jessica, Victoria, Katelyn, Kelsey, Joshua, Brett, Christian, Abel, Travis, and Charlie, as well as her 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter and her faithful K9 companion, Missy.
Rose was also blessed with the companionship of her brother, Billy Smith, who survives her.
Preceding her in death were her biological parents, Carrie Smith and Shelby Rose, as well as the parents who lovingly raised her, Willie Ann and Charles Moody. She also mourned the passing of her siblings Ella Mae Ridgeway, Hazel Shepperd, Mary Reynolds, Madeline Miles, Charles Moody, James Moody, Woodrow Moody, Rita Stanley, Shelby Highlander, Harper Rose, and Raymond Rose.
Her life was a testament to faith, family, and community. Rose’s legacy is carried forward by those whose lives she touched with grace and affection.
