JMHS Maverick Battalion reflects on strong 2025 and prepares for busy spring

JMTC Maverick Battalion Public Affairs Officer

The JMHS JROTC Maverick Battalion completed an active and productive fall and winter, with cadets participating in a wide range of school and community events.

During the fall sports season, cadets provided color guards for multiple home football games and conducted the raising of the American flag over the football field before kickoff. In recognition of Veterans Day, cadets also demonstrated the proper folding of the American flag for students at Mountain View School.

Our JLAB team (JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl) completed the first round of the national competition in November and advanced to the second round in February. Advancing is not easy, and their progress reflects strong problem solving abilities and solid academic skills, especially in STEM related areas.

In December, the battalion participated in both the Union and Peterstown Christmas Parades. Cadets also continued our long-standing tradition of supporting local veterans, attending the American Legion Post 145 Christmas Party in Peterstown on Dec. 11 and the Vietnam Veterans/American Legion Post 100 Christmas Party in Union on Dec. 14.

On Dec. 16, many of our cadets gathered at the home of Dennis and Kay Taylor to wrap Christmas gifts for disadvantaged youth, helping ensure local families had needed support during the holiday season. We closed out the semester with our annual in class JROTC Christmas Party on Dec. 18 – an event entirely planned and executed by cadet leadership.

January kept the momentum going. On Jan. 23, six cadets represented the battalion during a JMTC recruiting visit at Mountain View School, continuing to build career focused partnerships within the county. Later in the month, we completed our Winter Promotion Board, an important milestone in cadet advancement and leadership training.

Most recently, our rifle team competed in the State Competition, placing sixth overall, with Cadet Alyssa Broyles earning a bronze medal for her performance.

With a productive winter behind us, the Maverick Battalion now turns its attention to our spring calendar. With a year already marked by accomplishment and growth – and an ambitious spring ahead – the JMHS Maverick Battalion remains dedicated to setting the standard for community engagement and cadet development.
