Carnegie Hall will host a free community workshop, An Introduction to American Sign Language, on Saturday, Mar. 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, offering participants an engaging and welcoming opportunity to explore the fundamentals of ASL.
Presented in conjunction with the upcoming Sweet Honey in the Rock® concert, the workshop reflects a shared commitment between Carnegie Hall and the legendary ensemble to foster inclusivity, accessibility, and meaningful connection through the arts.
Led by instructor Emma Foster (BA in American Sign Language & Interpreting / MSW, LICSW), the session will introduce basic vocabulary, conversational signs, and cultural context, creating an inviting entry point for anyone interested in learning how ASL enriches communication and community life.
This special workshop also deepens the experience surrounding Sweet Honey in the Rock’s Mar. 20 performance, which will feature professional ASL interpretation. Participants will gain tools that allow them to engage more fully with the concert, transforming the event into both a performance and a learning opportunity. Carnegie Hall encourages workshop attendees to join the concert as well, celebrating the power of music and language to bring people together.
