Bragging rights and prize money are up for grabs in Greenbrier County on Feb. 8 when the Greenbrier County 4-H Leader’s Association holds their 10th Annual Venison Cooking Contest, Bingo and Auction. Each year Greenbrier County 4-H hosts the event to raise funds to benefit 4-H youth attending 2014 summer 4-H Camps.

Be prepared for an afternoon of fun for the whole family. The Venison Cook-Off will kick off on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. in the West Virginia University Building at the West Virginia State Fairgrounds in Lewisburg. Bingo and the silent auction will begin at 4 p.m. followed by the live auction starting at 6 p.m. Activities for children will be provided as well as concessions while the dishes are being judged.

The Greenbrier County 4-H Leaders and 4-H members hope you will reserve a small portion of your harvested deer meat to compete in the contest. There will be both a youth and an adult division this year with 1st – $50, 2nd – $25 and 3rd – $15 placing and prize money in each division. There is a $10 entry fee and you will be asked to provide a copy of your recipe on the day of the contest. All entries need to contain at least 16 ounces of venison (or 2 ounces per serving). Half of a table space will be provided for presentation and décor. Contestants can set up their dish between 3 and 3:45 p.m. Judging will be based on the following criteria: Taste Appeal 50%, Appearance and Presentation 20%, Recipe Meets Requirements 20% and Originality 10%.

Come on out and support your Greenbrier County 4-H, and showcase your own skills in venison preparation Feb. 8.
