Gloria Tuckwiller with her quilt called “Family Traditions,” which won the People’s Choice Award at last year’s State Fair Quilt Show. Tuckwiller designed and made the quilt to commemorate the fair’s 90th anniversary. The quilt depicts the shape of the state of West Virginia in the center surrounded by mountains, a Ferris wheel, and fireworks in the background and a 90-year banner in the foreground. This centerpiece was then framed by 18 individually designed squares, each one depicting a different aspect of the fair. Some of the designs, which were made using the paper piecing applique quilting technique, included a race horse, cow, flowers, and tractor. Tuckwiller, 29, has made 10 quilts since she began quilting approximately 10 years ago, including another originally designed quilt depicting the Fat Albert carnival game at the fair that she exhibited a few years ago. Tuckwiller plans to enter the State Fair Quilt Show again this year.
